PROFILESRobert M. WhiteIALD, LC, IESNARobert White’s interest in lighting started in his early years as a fine arts student at Wayne State University and the Center for Creative Studies. After receiving his BFA from the Center for Creative Studies, he joined Illuminating Concepts where he developed his skills as a professional lighting designer. Project under White’s direction included commercial offices, custom residential, and retail projects with multinational brands. After eight years at Illuminating Concepts, White joined Sigma Associates, spending three years further refining his craft as a lighting designer at this engineering/architecture firm. While with Sigma Associates, White generated lighting solutions for larger projects, including the Northwest Airlines McNamara Terminal, at Detroit Metro Airport, and GM Global Headquarters. In 2001, White founded Quark Lighting LLC with the mission of providing experienced, well-rounded lighting expertise using the latest technology, and energy consciousness as key elements in design development. In its brief history Quark has provided successful lighting solution for clients ranging from multinational corporations to the discerning homeowner, with projects varying from houses of worship, resorts, health care, and exhibit and museum lighting. White has received over 25 awards of recognition including an IIDA
Award of Distinction for the McNamara Passenger Tunnel. Projects
he has played a key part in have been featured in a variety of industry
publications, including Lighting Dimensions, LD&A, Architectural
Lighting Magazine, MONDO, Metropolis and most recently ILLUMINATOR
from Russia. Additionally, White is helping to ensure a promising
future for lighting design by severing as a lighting design instructor
